Days might be numbered for voice of UH sports

An Oceanic Time Warner Cable acquisition of exclusive rights to University of Hawaii sports could signal the end of UH’s long partnership with KFVE — "The Home Team" — and unplug the mic on sportscaster Jim Leahey.

Leahey has been the colorful and erudite voice of UH sports on KGMB and KFVE since the 1980s, and prior to that on radio. Like his father before him, Leahey has become an island sports broadcasting institution, and it would be sad to see his time in the booth come to an end.

But if Oceanic is looking for a fresh start, why not literally turn it over to the next generation — KHON’s Kanoa Leahey.

Help, if you can, flesh out details of WWII internees

The National Park Service will gather ideas through this month on Hawaii’s World War II internment camps and their records. With any luck, the result will be a monument, museum or some other means of creating a lasting reminder for the public of this sad history.

While official files do exist at the National Archives and Records Administration, it’s easier to retrieve some of the human stories from sites scattered across the Web.

Example: Most of the internees were of Japanese ancestry, but the German American Internee Coalition (gaic.info) tells some tales of German families, under the "Real People" and "U.S. Resident Internees" links. Look for the one on the Berg family.

And check the NPS site (nps.gov/pwro/honouliuli), especially if you can add to the chronicles.
