Chang, BYUH upend Grand Canyon

Jet Chang scored 33 points, hitting five of Brigham Young-Hawaii’s 15 3-pointers as the Seasiders kept alive their chances for at least a share of the Pacific West Conference men’s basketball title with a 98-77 win over Grand Canyon last night at Cannon Activities Center.

BYU-Hawaii’s victory, coupled with Chaminade’s loss to Dixie State created a three-way tie for first heading into Saturday’s final night of the regular season. The Seasiders (17-7, 12-3) will face the Silverswords (19-8, 12-3) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at McCabe Gym.

The Red Storm (19-6, 12-3) finishes at Hawaii-Hilo (16-10, 8-7).

Last night, Chang (19) and Rory Patterson (17) combined for 36 of the Seasiders’ 49 first-half points, with Patterson hitting five 3-pointers and Chang three. Patterson finished with 19 points, Marques Whippy 16 and Junior Ale 10, nine on three 3-pointers.

Kyle Speed and Chris Johnson each had 14 points for the Antelopes (14-11, 9-6).

Dixie State tips Chaminade

At McCabe Gym, Donovan Plunkett scored 18 points as Dixie State snapped Chaminade’s eight-game winning streak, 72-69.

Steven Bennett led the Silverswords with 20 points.

» Chaminade fell two places to No. 6 in this week’s NCAA Division II West Region rankings, with Brigham Young-Hawaii one spot behind the Silverswords.

The top eight teams in the final regional ranking qualify for the 64-team NCAA Division II tournament.

Grand Canyon routs BYUH women

Samantha Murphy scored 22 points to lead Grand Canyon to an 80-45 win over Brigham Young-Hawaii last night at Cannon Activities Center, clinching a share of the Pacific West Conference women’s basketball title.

Murphy, who leads the country in scoring at the D-II level, added nine rebounds for the Antelopes (26-2, 14-1 PacWest).

Richelle Rieben hit four 3-pointers en route to 14 points for the Seasiders (5-19, 4-11). It was the final home game for BYUH seniors Rieben, Madison Kite, Zori Drew and Lauren Hall.

The Seasiders will finish the season against Chaminade Saturday at McCabe Gym. Rieben will end her career as the all-time leading scorer for the BYUH women and the all-time leader in 3-pointers, male or female, in Seasiders basketball history.

Dixie State overwhelms Chaminade

Johnna Brown scored 19 points and Breann Hill added 16 to lead Dixie State over Chaminade at McCabe Gym.

Markeshia Manning came off the bench to lead the Silverswords (1-21, 1-14) with nine points against the Red Storm (23-3, 13-2).

HPU 10th in regional ranking

Hawaii Pacific (16-6, 13-6) remains in contention for a postseason bid, checking in at No. 10 in the final NCAA Division II West Region rankings. The 64-team NCAA Division II tournament field will be announced on Sunday.

Vulcans shut out by Grand Canyon

Three Grand Canyon pitchers held the Hawaii-Hilo baseball team to three hits and the Antelopes raced to a 13-0 win yesterday at Wong Stadium.

Grand Canyon starter Coltin White struck out seven over six innings and earned the win. The Vulcans’ Chris Pascual also had seven strikeouts in three innings before being lifted as UHH fell to 6-4.

R.J. Etchebarren, P.J. Garcia, Jackie Samora and Joey Bristyan drove in two runs each for Grand Canyon (5-9).
