Wahine avenge loss, beat Longwood

The Hawaii softball team avenged an earlier tight loss to Longwood by edging the Lancers 3-2 last night at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

A throwing error on Dara Pagaduan’s ground ball to second base with two out in the bottom of the seventh allowed Jasey Jensen to score the winning run.

UH sophomore Kaia Parnaby struck out five over three innings and earned the win in relief of starter Stephanie Ricketts.

Longwood ace Briana Wells, who shut out UH in a 1-0 win last Friday, limited the Wahine to one hit through 6 1/3 innings before Sarah Robinson lifted a fly ball over the head of the right fielder for a triple. Jensen pinch-ran for Robinson and, after a strikeout, Pagaduan’s grounder to the right side of the infield was bobbled, then thrown away to end the game.

UH (21-5) next plays Cleveland State in the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament tomorrow at 6 p.m. BYU, California and Iona are also entered in the tournament, which runs through Saturday.

Wong earns WAC honor

Hawaii junior Kolten Wong was named the Western Athletic Conference hitter of the week yesterday.

Wong batted 11-for-22 in five games and saved his best for last. He hit two home runs, including a walk-off shot in the 10th inning Sunday to give Hawaii a 6-5 victory over Portland.

It’s the second time Wong has won the award and first since his freshman season.

Wong upped his average to .368, second only to senior Sean Montplaisir, and has a team-leading 25 hits and nine runs scored.

HPU takes down West Florida

A sweep in the doubles competition helped seventh-ranked Hawaii Pacific close out No. 5 West Florida 6-3 at the Las Vegas Invitational women’s tennis tournament yesterday. The Sea Warriors improved to 11-3. Junior Zora Vickova remained unbeaten in 12 singles matches, but dropped her first set of the season to Taylor Brewster when winning 6-0, 6-1.

Warriors drop a spot in poll

Despite winning twice last week, Hawaii dropped to No. 10 in yesterday’s AVCA Division I-II Men’s Top 25 volleyball poll.

Last week’s No. 10 Penn State (15-5) traded places with the Warriors (10-9). The top four places remained the same: USC (14-1), BYU (13-6), Stanford (15-4) and Ohio State (15-2). Hawaii next plays at No. 5 Long Beach State (10-8) on Friday and Saturday.

Hawaii last in men’s golf

The Hawaii men’s golf team was in last place out of 12 teams going into today’s final round of the University of San Diego Intercollegiate at the San Diego Country Club.

The Warriors were at 797 after yesterday’s second-round 404, well behind leader SMU (724). Nainoa Calip was the top UH golfer, tied for 35th at 152.

Punahou graduate Alex Ching, a junior at USD, moved into a tie for first with SMU’s Kelly Craft at 139 after yesterday’s 4-under 68.

Arizona State leads Thompson golf

Arizona State’s Carlota Ciganda carded a 2-under 142 to take a one-stroke lead heading into today’s final round of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational women’s golf tournament at Kaneohe Klipper.

Arizona State also leads the team competition with a 586, five strokes better than second-place Notre Dame in the 19-school field. Host Hawaii was in seventh at 616 with Rainbow Wahine Brittany Bomar and Erika Lundberg in a large group tied for 16th at 152.
