3 named to NABC district team
Chaminade’s Steven Bennett and Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Marques Whippy and Jet Chang were named to the NABC All-West District basketball team yesterday.
Bennett, a senior guard, and Whippy, also a senior guard, were on the six-member first team, while Chang, a junior guard, was on the six-member second team. Bennett finished his career at Chaminade eighth all-time in assists (265) and ninth in scoring average (16.0).
Whippy, the most outstanding player Monday’s NCAA Division II West Regional, and Chang continue their season Wednesday in Springfield, Mass. The Seasiders (20-8) play Bloomfield, N.J. (24-8), in the quarterfinals (2:30 p.m. Hawaii time).
National honor to UHH’s Waracka
Hawaii-Hilo sophomore Amber Waracka was named the NFCA Division II national pitcher of the week for her 3-0 performance last week.
The Kamehameha product struck out 19 and allowed five hits with an ERA of 0.00. One of her two shutouts was over No. 5 Hawaii Pacific, 2-0.
It was the second time in two seasons Waracka earned the national honor.
