Vulcans golf team finishes 15th

Hawaii-Hilo’s Nyssa Aoki shot a 4-over-par 76 yesterday to lead the Vulcans in the final round of the Grand Canyon Women’s Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz.

UH-Hilo finished 15th in the team standings with a two-round score of 647. Aoki tied for 24th with a total of 156, nine strokes behind individual medalist Ashley Mooney of Grand Canyon. Kiley Umeda tied for 51st at 161.

Cal State Monterey Bay won the 18-team tournament with a total of 604.

Silverswords split doubleheader

Chaminade rallied from a four-run deficit in the second game of a softball doubleheader yesterday to earn a split with Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, Calif.

The Silverswords (11-25) lost the opening game 5-0, managing two hits off of Samantha Lipperd, who struck out 15.

Chaminade fell behind 4-0 in the second game before Samantha Ford’s two-run double highlighted a three-run rally in the sixth. The Silverswords then took the lead on Ford’s two-out, two-run single in the seventh.

4 from Hawaii win judo gold

Hawaii’s Teshya, Teniya and Javen Alo and Nicole Taniguchi won gold medals in their divisions at the USA Judo Youth and Scholastic National Championships last weekend in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Teshya Alo won the juvenile A 53-kilogram division and received awards as the most outstanding female competitor and for best technique. Teniya Alo won the intermediate 2 division at 34 kg. Javen Alo won gold in the 23-kg bantam division. Taniguchi won the 48-kg IJF division.
