UHH’s Waracka throws perfect game

Hawaii-Hilo junior pitcher Amber Waracka tossed a perfect game as Hawaii-Hilo shut out Brigham Young-Hawaii 5-0 in the first game of yesterday’s Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader at the UHH field.

The Vulcans (22-10, 15-3) completed the sweep with a 10-0 mercy-rule win in five innings to move into sole possession of first in the conference. Christina Pedroza and Jessica Pepin combined on a one-hitter with nine strikeouts, and Pedroza helped her own cause with a two-run homer in a five-run fourth.

Waracka (11-4) struck out eight in facing the minimum 21 batters. Nicole Alconcel’s solo home run in the first inning — the first of her two on the day — put the Vulcans ahead of the Seasiders (5-25, 3-17).

UH sailors finish in seventh place

The University of Hawaii coed sailing team finished in seventh place at the PCCSC Coed Dinghy Championship last weekend in Long Beach, Calif. Stanford blew away the field with a low score of 77 points, nearly 30 points ahead of its nearest competitor.

Following Stanford were UC Santa Barbara (106), UCLA (109) and USC (125). Those four teams qualified for the ISCA National Semifinals to be held at the end of this month.

Zachary Hester, Craig Schifferns, Lani Johnson, Adam Pokras and Cienna Patmont competed for Hawaii.

Dixie State edges UHH in baseball

Ammon Zitting singled home Trevor Goff with the winning run in the top of the 12th inning to lead Dixie State to a 1-0 victory over Hawaii-Hilo in Pacific West Conference baseball yesterday at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Three Red Storm pitchers combined to limit the Vulcans to seven hits. Kyle DiMartino got the win with two innings in relief of starter Mike Dedrick.

Zachary Hamasaki went 3-for-6 for UHH (10-16, 6-11).

Dixie State improved to 21-12 and 17-14.

Vulcans golf team in fifth place

Travis Russell carded an even-par 72 to share sixth place and help the Hawaii-Hilo men’s golf team to fifth place going into today’s final round of the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational in Turlock, Calif.

The Vulcans were at 298, eight strokes behind leader Cal State San Bernardino in the 20-team event. Russell was in a five-way tie for sixth, five shots behind Kenny Pigman of Cal State San Bernardino.
