Moore falls in Bells Beach final

Hawaii’s Carissa Moore lost to Sally Fitzgibbons of Australia in the final round of the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia, this morning.

Moore, 18, the top-ranked ASP women’s surfer, lost 16.77-15.40 but remains in front for the overall ASP Women’s World Title, while Fitzgibbons moved up to No. 2 with her first ASP World Title event victory.

"We’ve had a lot of good clashes last year and this year, and her win’s been a long time coming, so congrats to her," Moore said in an ASP release. "Of course I would have liked to have rung the Bell, but that may have to happen next year."

Hawaii’s Coco Ho lost to Fitzgibbons, 20, in the quarterfinals, 18.56-14.53.

UH tennis loses at NMSU

The Hawaii women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to New Mexico State yesterday in Las Cruces, N.M., to open the Rainbow Wahine’s final stretch of regular-season matches.

Katarina Poljakova won at the No. 1 singles court, while Xenia Suworowa won at No. 3 and Alyssa Nafarrete at No. 6 for UH (8-11, 2-2 Western Athletic Conference). But the Aggies swept the Wahine in doubles play and took the other three singles courts.

UHH beats Dominican

The Hawaii-Hilo women’s tennis team (7-16 overall) defeated Dominican University 7-2 yesterday in San Rafael, Calif.

The Vulcans took four of six singles courts to seize the win.

Vulcans men come up short

Hawaii-Hilo’s men’s tennis team came up just short of dealing UC San Diego its first loss of the season in a 5-4 defeat yesterday in Rohnert Park, Calif.

UCSD, ranked No. 10 nationally, won 6-4 in the third set of the No. 4 singles court to pull out the win.

HPU tops UHH in baseball

Hawaii Pacific got two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally for a 4-3 victory over Hawaii-Hilo yesterday at Hans L’Orange Field.

HPU (19-19, 15-10 PacWest) got a 5-for-5 performance at the plate from second baseman Lester Akeo. UHH dropped to 15-22 and 10-15 in Pacwest.

Sea Warriors sweep doubleheader

The No. 16 Hawaii Pacific softball team swept a PacWest doubleheader from Chaminade yesterday with 6-5 and 8-4 victories at Palolo Rec Field.

HPU improved to 34-9 overall and 20-4 in PacWest play. Sophomore shortstop Celina Garces went a combined 4-for-8 for the day for the Sea Warriors.
