Dean Wilson ties course record

AVONDALE, La. » Kaneohe native Dean Wilson matched the course record with a 64 at the Zurich Classic to land three strokes behind leader Bubba Watson.

Wilson missed a chance to break the course record on the par-3 ninth, his closing hole, when his tee shot landed short and right of the green.

“These courses of Pete Dye are so demanding,” Wilson said. “So, when you have 20 mph wind, it’s really difficult. He doesn’t give you any bailouts.”

Watson shot a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over Josh Teater.

The long-hitting Watson eagled the par-5 11th — his second hole of the round — for the second time, holing a 20-footer to get to 8 under. He added a 4-foot birdie putt on 13 and a 13-footer on 14, but bogeyed the 18th when he hit his third shot over the green from a bunker. He also birdied the seventh with a 3-footer.

Teater shot a 66, dropping two strokes with a double bogey on the par-5 18th.

John Rollins was 8 under after a 69.

Wahine lose in MPSF water polo

San Jose State spoiled the title hopes of the University of Hawaii by beating the Wahine 11-9 yesterday in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament in San Jose.

The loss dropped the Rainbow Wahine, who entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed after their highest-ever finish in the MPSF, into the consolation bracket. They can finish no higher than fifth. UH (17-8) will face San Diego State today. The No. 9 Aztecs fell to No. 2 Cal, 7-6.

"San Jose State played well. They shot well. They shot with confidence and deserved to win," UH coach Michel Roy said. "We had many, many opportunities that hit the post or the goalie’s stomach."

Andrea Vogt, who led the conference in total goals, scored five for the Spartans, including four in the second half. UH got hat tricks from seniors Leonie Van Der Molen and Saara Majuri.

UH men’s tennis team ousted

The University of Hawaii men’s tennis season came to an end after a 4-0 quarterfinal loss to Boise State yesterday in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Boise, Idaho.

Hawaii, the three-time defending conference champion, ended its season at 6-13. The Rainbow Warriors were seeded No. 5 after a 2-4 regular-season WAC mark.

Boise State won the doubles point, then won the first three singles matches. The four other matches were abandoned.

It was the final collegiate appearance for Hawaii seniors Dennis Lajola, Daniel Llarenas and Jeremy Tweedt.
