Kono co-medalist at regional

Honolulu’s Stephanie Kono closed with a 4-under-par 68 to earn co-medalist honors yesterday at the NCAA Women’s Golf Central Regional in South Bend, Ind. The UCLA junior had a three-day total of 218 to lead the second-ranked Bruins to the regional championship by four shots over LSU.

Kono, a Punahou graduate, birdied the last two holes to share top honors with LSU’s Megan McChrystal, ranked No. 1 nationally by Golfstat.com. It was Kono’s first win of the year and fourth top-five finish.

UCLA led wire-to-wire for its fifth win of the year. It earned a school-record 11th consecutive NCAA Championship berth. The nationals are May 18-21 at College Station, Texas.

 

Lumpkin, James at QB lunch

Hawaii women’s track and field coach Carmyn James and George Lumpkin, the director of player personnel for the Warriors football team, are the guest speakers at tomorrow’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Maple Garden restaurant.

James will discuss hosting the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s track and field championships, which begin Tuesday at Ching Field. Lumpkin will review spring practice and the scrimmage held on the Big Island.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program to follow at noon. The cost is $15.
