Actors wanted for Mouse work

More than 2,000 people have applied to be among 800 members of the "cast" for "roles" at the Walt Disney Co.’s Aulani Resort in West Oahu’s Ko Olina resort area.

No, they won’t be play-acting. In any other resort hotel, they would be called staff members, but Mickey Mouse’s influence prevails, as it should in order to appeal to guests.

Girls lead way in wind turbines

Here’s a good way to start the school week: Let’s give a shout-out to Shawnalyn Wing Chun Sunagawa and Sara Elisabeth Middendorf, both seniors at St. Andrew’s Priory who won a national award. Their project concerned the "polygonal airfoil wind turbine," which is kin to the ones seen on Maui and above Kahuku but with one big exception: They have no windmill-type blades.

They’re certainly not the only ones doing research on this innovation, but their work impressed the United Technologies Corp. at the recent Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles. Planners of Hawaii’s future wind-power projects, take note: The girls will be job-hunting in a few short years.
