Dugas, Nelson, Hayashi advance

Eric Dugas, Kirk Nelson and Kyle Hayashi advanced to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open golf championship with victories yesterday on the Big Island.

Dugas, of Waikoloa, shot a 2-under-par 70 on the Waikoloa Kings’ Course to advance to sectional qualifying at Summit, N.J.

Kaikala Wilson of Kamuela and Shaun Downie of Hilo shot 3-over 75s for the first and second alternate positions.

Nelson, of Kihei, and Hayashi, of Wailuku, shot 74s to share medalist honors in breezy conditions at the King Kamehameha Golf Club in Wailuku.

Nelson moves on to the sectional qualifier in Dallas, while Hayashi heads to Glendale, Calif.

Sectional qualifiers advance to the U.S. Open, scheduled for June 16-19 at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

Marr, Wee capture triathlon titles

Timothy Marr won the men’s title and Bree Wee the women’s at Sunday’s Honolulu Triathlon, part of the International Festival of Sports at Ala Moana Beach Park..

Marr was timed in 1 hour, 50 minutes and 36 seconds over the Olympic triathlon distances — 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run. Yu Shinozaki was second (1:55:50) and Gregory Price third (1:56:56).

Wee led the women’s field in 1:59:43. Michelle Simmons was second (2:06:58) and Rae Bastoni third (2:07:48).

Ryan Koss and Natalia Kravchuk won their respective divisions in the sprint triathlon, which is comprised of a 750-meter swim, 20K bike and 5K run. Koss was the top male in 1:05:01, with Jimmy Davis (1:07:40) second and Justyn Raymond (1:10:10) third. Kravchuk easily topped the women’s field in 1:08:25 with Gina Estep (1:17:40) second and Georgie Pulman-Olzask (1:24:23) third.

In the 10K run, Yoichiro Baso was the top male (36:45) and Mamiko Berger the top female (39:47). The top 5K finishers were Matthew Ardessi (male, 21:48) and Meighan Igoe (female, 25:22).

David Locke won the 4K swim event in 41:04, with top female Miki David second overall in 53:40.
