Hawaii’s enviable beauty sometimes hides danger

Many of Hawaii’s natural trails are incredibly scenic and accessible — but now comes another harrowing reminder that they also can be very dangerous.

Are Hjorungnes, a 40-year-old Norwegian engineering professor who has been working with University of Hawaii faculty during a one-year stay, disappeared Saturday on a Mokuleia trail while with a running group. Rescue officials and volunteers searched the area for three days.

Last month, well-known isle blogger Ryan Suenaga, 44, of Kaneohe died when he fell 150 feet off the Mount Olomana trail while on a group hike. He had been trying to traverse a steep trail between the second and third peaks.

It’s sound advice to stay on trails and go with a group. But sometimes, even sound advice is no guarantee against the myriad unknowns of Hawaii’s beautiful but treacherous landscape.

‘Hawaii Five-0′ season ends, leaving us hanging

Well, the first season of the new "Hawaii Five-0" has come to a close. For DVRers out there, spoiler alert! Here’s what happened: Five-0 is shut down. So is the governor. So is Kelly Hu. Steve McGarrett and Kono Kalakaua are under arrest. Wo Fat is back. Danno is left to pick up the pieces.

For those who winced every time McGarrett ignored proper police procedures — using a hand grenade to open a locked door, for instance — this ending might even sound plausible.

Can’t wait to see what happens next!
