Honolulu police investigate the scene of a hit-and-run accident on Kona Street. Police say a Toyota sedan in the makai lane went over the median and hit a man in a wheel chair on the mauka sidewalk.

Honolulu police arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with a hit-and-run accident near Ala Moana Center that sent a man in a wheelchair and a woman to the hospital.

Police said the crash happened at about 2:30 a.m. on Kona Street between Piikoi and Kona Iki streets. A 2005 white Toyota sedan in the makai lane on Kona Street went over the raised median and hit a 20-year-old man in a wheelchair and a woman, whose age was not known, who were on the mauka sidewalk, said Lt. David Nilsen of the Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division.

The man went to the hospital in critical condition, but improved to serious condition, Nilsen said. The woman was in good condition.

Patrol officers stopped a Toyota sedan in the McCully area shortly after the crash and arrested the driver, Nilsen said. He was in custody on suspicion of leaving the scene of a serious accident and driving under the influence.
