Sectional tennis finals today at CORP

Angelo Niculescu plays Anton Samuilau in the men’s final and Scout Shutter faces Maureen Diaz in the women’s final today in the U.S. Open National Playoffs Hawaii Pacific Sectional Qualifying Tournament.

The men’s final is 8 a.m. and the women’s at 9 a.m. at the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park Tennis Complex.

The mixed doubles final is noon, with Diaz and Erik Nelson-Kortland meeting Sarah Dvork and Samuilau.

Singles champions earn a wild-card entry in the U.S. Open qualifying tournament Aug. 23-26 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

The mixed doubles winner advances to the U.S. Open Mixed Doubles Championship, which starts Aug. 31 at the same site.

In the men’s semifinals, Samuilau, a former Hawaii Pacific player from Belarus, defeated Nelson-Kortland, of Marina del Rey, Calif., 6-0, 6-0, and Niculescu, of Lake Oswego, Ore., beat Matt Westmoreland (Pearl City/Texas A&M) 7-5, 6-3.

In the women’s semifinals, Shutter, of Kailua, eliminated Alexus Jones, of Orlando, Fla., 7-5, 6-1, while Diaz, of Glendale, Calif., dominated Dvorak, of Kurtistown, 6-2, 6-0.

James, McInnis to speak at QB Club

University of Hawaii women’s track coach Carmyn James and Honolulu Star-Advertiser sportswriter Brian McInnis are the featured speakers at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Maple Garden Restaurant.

Lunch is $15 and begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program at noon.
