Tennis Triple Crown trials on

A tennis doubleheader has been transformed into a Triple Crown with the Waikiki Tennis Club Clay Court Championship joining The Oahu Club and Blue Moon Men’s Night Doubles tournaments over the next two months.

The Triple Crown offers $10,000 in total prize money and a place in the doubles main draw of the 2012 Honolulu Challenger.

The series starts June 22-26 with the $1,000 Clay Court Championships, presented by Wealth Strategy Partners. Oahu Club Night Doubles also has a $1,000 purse and will be July 10-16. The series culminates with Hawaii’s premier tennis event, Men’s Night Doubles at Kailua Racquet Club, July 24-Aug. 6. That offers a $7,200 purse.

Any USTA member can enter the tournaments and play with different partners. Players earn points for each round won and the winning team gets $500 in bonus prize money along with a wild card into the Challenger.

Honolulu’s Chun at wrestling trials

Honolulu’s Clarissa Chun will compete in the World Team Wrestling Trials today and Saturday at Oklahoma City.

Chun, a 29-year-old Roosevelt High alum, is the No. 1 seed in the 48 kg (105.5 pounds) freestyle division.

The trials champions will represent the United States at Istanbul, Turkey, for the World Championships

Chun, a Missouri Valley College alum, finished fifth at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 48 kg division.
