AUSTIN, Texas >> Texas coach Mack Brown says defensive assistant Duane Akina will interview for the head coaching job at Hawaii.

Akina is a Hawaii native. Brown said Thursday he would like Akina to stay but would support the move.

Hawaii coach Greg McMackin retired after going 6-7 this year. The Warriors missed a bowl game for the second time in his four seasons.

Akina has spent the last 11 seasons at Texas coaching the secondary. His players have included Thorpe Award winners Michael Huff and Aaron Ross.

Since 2004, four Texas defensive assistants have left the Longhorns for head coaching jobs.
