U.S. correctional officer accused of having sex with inmate appears in court

A prison guard at the Federal Detention Center Honolulu is facing charges that he had sex with an inmate at the facility.

Special agents from the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice Office of Inspector General arrested Richard Seaman Thursday morning when he showed up for work, said Tom Simon, FBI special agent.

Seaman, 46, appeared in U.S. District Court Thursday afternoon, wearing his uniform shoes and trousers with a T-shirt, where he pleaded not guilty to five counts of sexual abuse of a ward. U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin S. Chang ordered Seaman released on $50,000 unsecured bond co-signed with his wife.

A federal grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging Seaman with having unlawful sex with a female inmate at the FDC on Sept. 23, Oct. 18, Oct. 21, Nov. 17 and Dec. 8 last year. It is unlawful for prison guards to have sex with inmates.
