Hawaii County and federal firefighters continue to prevent a brush fire, which began Friday morning in Kau, from spreading.

Fire officials said Monday the fire has blackened about 60 acres. 

The fire was initially found to be burning in a ravine between two macadamia nut orchards.

Five firefighters from the county and three from the National Park Service continued to work on maintaining the perimeter of the fire and prevent it from spreading. 

Smoldering fires and hot spots continue along the edge of and inside a deep ravine, as well as small spot fires within a macadamia nut orchard.

Fire crews were scheduled to monitor the fire overnight, the county fire department said in a news release.
