State to host Makapuu lighthouse hike for new year
State officials say they plan to host a morning hike on New Year’s Day along a lighthouse trail in east Oahu to celebrate the first sunrise of 2013.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources says it plans to open the scenic Makapuu lighthouse trail at Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline in anticipation of sunrise at 7:09 a.m.
The parking lot will open at 5:30 a.m. Officials say the lot filled in 15 minutes last year, with others parking along the highway and 500 people participating in the hike.
A Hawaiian chanter will greet the sunrise.
The hike is one of 550 nationwide as part of a movement to have hikes on the first day of the year.
