This composite satellite image taken this morning shows a weather system north and east of the islands that is bringing the chance of heavy showers to Maui and the Big Island.

The weather is looking pretty good for Santa after a weather system passes over the state as trade winds are forecast to return today.

The National Weather Service says winds will be light Sunday and there’s a chance of thunderstorms on Maui and the Big Island, because of a weather system that’s moving down the island chain.

But after the system passes, trade winds should return today.

There’s a slight chance that Big Island summits could get a dusting of snow Sunday. The chance of some heavy rain on Hawaii island may continue today and Christmas Eve, as the weather system lingers just east of the state.

Other islands should see the usual trade wind weather of partly to mostly sunny skies with some windward and mauka showers today through Christmas Day.
