The incident began at about 8 a.m. when firefighters were called to the Aniani Place in Waipahu to extinguish a rubbish fire under a bridge at Farrington Highway.
Police reopened Farrington Highway, except for one westbound lane,Tuesday afternoon after gas crews repaired a break in a 4-inch line.
The highway was closed more than five hours in both directions from Waipahu Depot Road to Pupupuhi Street near Honowai Neighborhood Park. Fire officials reported the leak was repaired about 1:15 p.m.
Fire Inspector Dave Jenkins said a rubbish fire was reported at 6:45 a.m. under Waipahu Stream bridge near Anini Place and Farrington Highway.
Firefighters had the rubbish fire, which was burning on the west side of the river, under control within 10 minutes.
Firefighters were recalled to the same area under bridge a few minutes later because the fire had been restarted and it was again extinguished at 7:52 a.m.
A gas leak was detected coming from a break in the 4-inch gas line on the west side of the stream which was unrelated to the rubbish fire, Jenkins said.
Hawaii Gas Co. workers were called to repair the break and work was expected to take at least five hours.
No evacuations were ordered.
All traffic was re-routed around the bridge at 9 a.m.
The road was reopened about 2 p.m.
