A 19-year-old Pukalani man died when he lost control of a Ford multi-purpose vehicle, which rolled over on Old Haleakala Highway near Aeloa Road Monday night.

Maui police identified the victim as Jose Vasquez Jr. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 22-year-old man sitting in the front seat suffered minor injures and was treated at the scene. Police said the passenger was wearing a seat belt and that Vasquez was not buckled in.

Speed appears to be a factor in the 7:28 p.m. crash. It’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved.

Police closed the road between the intersections of Alohi Place and Old Haleakala Highway and Haleakala and Old Haleakala highways, while traffic officers investigated the crash.

The death is Maui County’s first traffic fatality of the year, compared to two deaths at this time last year.
