Hikers veer off the Makapu‘u trail to make it down to the tide pools.

Ocean Safety personnel kicked off what is traditionally one of their busiest long weekends of the year with a pair of morning rescues Friday in Makapuu.

About 11:15 a.m., Ocean Safety personnel responded to an emergency call at the Makapuu tide pools, where a 22-year-old woman was injured after being knocked over by a wave.

A rescue watercraft was used to retrieve the woman, who declined transport to a hospital.

About 11:50 a.m., lifeguards assisted a 51-year-old man who hit his head on the shoreline at Makapuu Beach. The man was transported in serious condition to a trauma center.

Ocean Safety and Emergency Medical Services are reminding people to know their capabilities and to not push their limits.
