No. 12 Texas A&M runs away from Wahine in hoops

Texas A&M’s defense fueled an 82-41 rout of the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team today at the Cannon Activities Center in Laie.

The 12th-ranked Aggies (6-1) pressured the Rainbow Wahine (4-5) into 14 turnovers in the first half and scored 23 points off of takeaways to build a 39-15 lead at halftime. Texas A&M continued to pull away in the second half to win its opening game in the Tom Weston Classic hosted by BYUH.

The loss capped a run of five games, including three against nationally ranked teams, in eight days for the Rainbow Wahine. They return to the Stan Sheriff Center on Wednesday for an exhibition game against BYUH.

Courtney Williams and Khaalia Hillsman led Texas A&M with 12 points each and Courtney Walker and Rachel Mitchell both finished with 10 points. The Aggies shot 54 percent from the field, finished with 15 steals and committed just five turnovers.

Kalei Adolpho led UH with 12 points and Destiny King finished with nine for the Wahine, who went 0-for-13 from 3-point range.
