West Virginia evens baseball series with Hawaii

Kyle Gray went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and Ross Vance held Hawaii to one run over seven innings to lead West Virginia to a series-tying 4-1 victory over the Rainbow Warriors tonight at Les Murakami Stadium.

Kyle Von Ruden (1-1) pitched eight innings for Hawaii (5-6) and gave up three earned runs on nine hits with no walks and a career-high six strikeouts.

Vance (3-0) allowed four hits with two walks and four strikeouts to pick up the win for the Mountaineers (6-2).

Casey Ryan, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning, made his first start at designated hitter and drove in Hawaii’s only run with a single in the fourth inning.

Jacob Sheldon-Collins singled in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Michael Grove pitched the final two innings to earn his first save for WVU.

The series continues Saturday night at 6:35.
