No. 19 Michigan beats Hawaii in 10 innings

Harrison Wenson singled home Matt Ramsay in the top of the 10th inning and No. 19 Michigan overcame a furious Hawaii rally in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 5-4 victory tonight at Les Murakami Stadium.

Hawaii (6-9) trailed 4-1 with two outs in the ninth and nobody on when five straight batters reached base. Kekai Rios drove in a run on an infield single and freshman Ethan Lopez, making his first collegiate start at second, hit a two-run single to right to tie the game at 4.

Rios took third on the play and tried to score on the next at-bat on a ball that got away from catcher Drew Lugbauer. Plate umpire Jake Uhlenhopp called Rios out on a close play to send it to extra innings.

That came on the heels of a bang-bang play at the plate in the top of the ninth inning that gave the Wolverines a 4-1 lead.

Lugbauer was ruled safe on a bunt attempt to first that Eric Ramirez threw home to Rios. Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso bolted out of the dugout to argue the call and was ejected.

Michigan (9-3) set a UH opponent single-game record with 20 strikeouts. Starter Brett Adcock struck out a career-high 12 in seven innings.

Kyle Von Ruden worked 7 2/3 innings for UH, allowing three runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Lopez went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs and Johnny Weeks added two of UH’s five hits.

Cody Culp (0-1) gave up two unearned runs in two innings to take the loss.

The series ends with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12:05 p.m.

Number 19? I thought Michigan was number 5?

Horrible call at the plate. I see this exact call made way too often, and not just at home, but on the bases. Usually, simply because the tag is applied they call the runner out. They aren’t paying attention to when the tag is put down, and that many times the runner has already touched the plate or base.
