Hawaii island police are looking for the suspect or suspects who took three five-gallon buckets of cash and coins from a county building on Lanikaula Street over the weekend.
Police said someone broke into the building sometime Friday night or Saturday and took the buckets, along with paper bus pass tickets.
Anyone with information about the theft or the people who may have the buckets of cash and coins is asked to call Officer Jacob Obermiller at (808) 961-2213 or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311. Tipsters can also call the Hawaii island Crime Stoppers number at (808) 961-3311.

The article doesn’t read as if the “buckets of cash and coins” were placed in a vault or other more secure location. If not, it doesn’t sound like prudent procedure.
Sounds like an inside job…why not offer a reward for the amount stolen…somebody will rat on thief. But in order to collect got to result in arrest, conviction and max incarceration. Net..net zero return on $ but perhaps satisfaction in knowing that thief may find “soul mate” in prison.

Betcha the thief took the bus passes so he could get home on the holoholo bus.
