Trial for Big Isle mayor Billy Kenoi pushed back to October

STAR-ADVERTISER

Hawaii island Mayor Billy Kenoi appeared in Hilo District Court on March 30 to be arraigned on felony theft charges. He was flanked by his attorneys Todd Eddins, left, and Richard Sing.

The Circuit Court trial of Big Island Mayor Billy Kenoi, scheduled to begin next month, has been continued until October, the Hawaii Tribune Herald report today.

Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario from Oahu will preside over the trial, now scheduled for Oct. 10. — a month before the November general elections — since all Big Island judges recused themselves from the case.

The trial was supposed to begin July 18 in Hilo. Kenoi’s attorney as yet has not asked that it be moved to another jurisdiction.

Kenoi is charged with two counts of second-degree theft, three counts each of third-degree theft and tampering with a government record, and a single count of making a false statement under oath involving the use of a government credit card for personal expenses.

The most serious offenses, two counts of second-degree theft, are Class C felonies that each carry a possible five-year prison term and $10,000 fine upon conviction. The other charges are misdemeanors and petty misdemeanors, with penalties of a year or less in jail.

Kenoi’s term ends in December since he is prohibited by law from seeking a third consecutive term.

What defense does he have? It’s not like we don’t have his P Card records.

  4. HOSSANA says:

WHY!!!!! Reason for continuance is because ????????

  5. fiveo says:

Yes SA, what is the reason for the continuance. How about doing some real reporting for a change.
Reasons for continuance are stated when the request is made. They are not asked for just because one party or the other feels
like it. Was the problem with Judge Del Rosario’s court schedule here on Oahu or what??

  6. mcc says:

    Resign Billie, resign.

  7. HAJAA1 says:

I’ve never witnessed more lazy reporting in my lifetime.

  8. yobo says:

What possible defense does Billy have ? Too much evidence.

Delayed indictment. Perhaps he thinks we’ll forget with time.

  9. Marauders_1959 says:

In spite of his faults… I’m still a fan of Billy Kenoi.
    Not a popular opinion but…

  10. Tahitigirl55 says:

Is he still in office? If so you may have to audit the books some more. The C & C just made themselves a laughing stock of the island along with Mr. Aloha, Billy himself Kenoi.

  11. danji says:

Ridiculous. Why the delay?? He hold be impeached. Even if he has repaid the county of his wrongdoing he committed a crime. It’s like if someone who robs a bank then when he gets caught and re pays the bank- does he go free? Being the mayor doing things like and not be terminated?? Hang him
