UH basketball releases 2016-17 schedule

The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warrior mens basketball team won 77 to 66 against the California State Golden Bears in a game on Friday in Spokane in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Hawaii men’s basketball team released its 2016-17 schedule today featuring 19 home dates at the Stan Sheriff Center.

UH opens up against a first-time opponent, SIU-Edwardsville of the Ohio Valley Conference, on Nov. 11 in the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic.

The highlights of the schedule were all previously announced: a Nov. 18 home matchup against powerhouse North Carolina; back-to-back games against Seton Hall and Princeton Dec. 6-7 at Bloch Arena for the Pearl Harbor Invitational; and the eight-team field of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic for Dec. 22, 23 and 25.

The revealed nonconference opponents are: Texas State (Nov. 13); Florida Atlantic (Nov. 14); Hawaii Hilo (Nov. 22); Troy (Nov. 25); Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Nov. 27); and Delaware State (Dec. 29).

UH opens 16 games of Big West Conference play on the road this year, Jan. 5 at Cal State Fullerton. The home conference opener is Jan. 14 vs. Long Beach State, the team the Rainbow Warriors defeated in March for their first BWC tournament championship.

The regular-season ends at LBSU on March 4. Barring a last-minute reversal of UH’s postseason ban by the NCAA, that will conclude the season as UH is currently ineligible for the 2017 Big West tournament.

It is possible UH could add a second Division II opponent as well as a preseason exhibition against some combination of Chaminade, Brigham Young-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific.
