Athlete sells Rio medal to help 3-year-old with eye cancer
WARSAW, Poland » Polish discus thrower Piotr Malachowski has sold the silver medal he won at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics to help pay for the medication of a 3-year-old boy suffering from eye cancer.
Malachowski said on Facebook that siblings Dominika and Sebastian Kulczyk, among the richest Poles, “declared the intention to buy my silver medal,” which he put up for auction to help pay for treatment of the boy, Olek, who is suffering from retinoblastoma.
Malachowski did not reveal the amount raised, but said the target — which was almost $130,000 — has been met.
“My silver medal is worth much more today than it was a week ago,” Malachowski said.

This man has a very good attitude. Not morally void like a lot of people in today’s world.
He is the opposite of someone like Lochte.
More aloha than us SA readers.
Beautiful. May both he and the child, as well as the medal’s wealthy purchasers, be richly blessed in all ways.
Very cool
This champion is a true winner. May good kharma be bestowed upon you.
This is a true champion.
This man won the gold.
First time I’ve agreed with anything The Boss has said.
I understand. Every once in a while, I agree with something ‘allie’ posts.
No way. Can’t we start a Fund Me or whatever? He should keep his medal and we should help the kid. Then let’s apply for sainthood for this man.
That’s cool and gracious, and everything. But, could’ve gotten together with other athletes and created a Kickstarter campaign, or similar, and raised funds with appearances and skills demonstrations. Really dislike giving up the medal after so many years of training to earn it, even if it’s for a great cause.
But, time is likely critical in the young boy’s situation. Fundraising can take a while.
Nah, I think this was personal. He wanted to give it all. Instead of looking at the medal in a trophy case, he can watch this young boy progress in life and enjoy the ride!
That’s quite possible. It’s a great show of the athlete’s character and sacrifice, to help the child.
Bravo, this Guy is a true Champion and our children need positive role models like this, not guys who will hold out of a contract to play professional sports and act like spoiled brats.
Another heart warming story.
What would be really cool is, if the wealthy Polish brother and sister, would present the medal back to Malachowski.
AMEN TO THAT!
Yes.
He has gone from a silver medalist to the ‘GOLDEN MEDALIST!’ God Bless You Forever!
A silver medalist with a heart of gold. Awesome, and I agree, the story would come full circle if the weathy benefactors would gift the medal back to Malachowski.
AWESOME example!!!
This Olympian could be awarded the “Pierre de Coubertin” medal of honor for his humanitarianism. This is beyond sportsmanship.
Yes I forgot about that one. I was always inspired by the spirit of amateur athletics but this guy lives it. I am humbled.
Wow! Just Wow! May e be blessed with many children who themselves care about others.
