Poland’s Piotr Malachowski made an attempt in the men’s discus throw final during the athletics competitions of the 2016 Summer Olympics at the Olympic stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Aug. 13.

WARSAW, Poland » Polish discus thrower Piotr Malachowski has sold the silver medal he won at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics to help pay for the medication of a 3-year-old boy suffering from eye cancer.

Malachowski said on Facebook that siblings Dominika and Sebastian Kulczyk, among the richest Poles, “declared the intention to buy my silver medal,” which he put up for auction to help pay for treatment of the boy, Olek, who is suffering from retinoblastoma.

Malachowski did not reveal the amount raised, but said the target — which was almost $130,000 — has been met.

“My silver medal is worth much more today than it was a week ago,” Malachowski said.

This man has a very good attitude. Not morally void like a lot of people in today’s world.

No way. Can’t we start a Fund Me or whatever? He should keep his medal and we should help the kid. Then let’s apply for sainthood for this man.

  7. seaborn says:

That’s cool and gracious, and everything. But, could’ve gotten together with other athletes and created a Kickstarter campaign, or similar, and raised funds with appearances and skills demonstrations. Really dislike giving up the medal after so many years of training to earn it, even if it’s for a great cause.

  8. OregonRedRaider says:

Bravo, this Guy is a true Champion and our children need positive role models like this, not guys who will hold out of a contract to play professional sports and act like spoiled brats.

    Another heart warming story.

  10. DDOrange says:

What would be really cool is, if the wealthy Polish brother and sister, would present the medal back to Malachowski.

  11. Dawg says:

He has gone from a silver medalist to the ‘GOLDEN MEDALIST!’ God Bless You Forever!

  12. roughrider says:

A silver medalist with a heart of gold. Awesome, and I agree, the story would come full circle if the weathy benefactors would gift the medal back to Malachowski.

This Olympian could be awarded the “Pierre de Coubertin” medal of honor for his humanitarianism. This is beyond sportsmanship.
