Mid-Pacific’s Michael Petrides swam his way to victory in the 500 free.

The boys title at the K. Mark Takai Swimming and Diving Championship came down to the final race Saturday, and Punahou’s 400-yard freestyle relay team came up with a thrilling performance.

The Buffanblu’s Jake Gaughan, Tyler Kawakami, Cole Schuyler and Alika Naone won event No. 24 in 3:07.66 to help Punahou edge Maryknoll and Mid-Pacific for the boys crown at rainy Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

“I’m proud of all the guys,” said Punahou coach Jeff Meister, whose boys team won its fourth consecutive state title. “That last relay was exciting. All those guys have worked hard all season. It was fantastic.”

The Buffanblu girls won nine of 12 events to easily claim their second consecutive state title.

The real game-changer on the Punahou boys 400 freestyle relay team was Schuyler, who put his team ahead while swimming the third leg.

“I had my eye on the prize,” he said. “I just wanted to go four laps as fast as I could. I didn’t want to worry about anything else.”

Maryknoll and Mid-Pacific were tied with 34 points entering the final event, while Punahou had 32.5. The victory gave the Buffanblu 44.50 points with the Spartans second with 42 and Owls third at 40.

In the last race, Maryknoll was second in 3:09.13 and Mid-Pacific third in 3:11.80.

“It was just a combination of hard work and trusting those guys to give me enough length to carry it home,” said Naone, who swam the anchor leg. “It was emotional and it’s important to me and my teammates because we worked so hard for this.”

The Buffanblu boys also won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:25.51, but didn’t win any individual events.

The Punahou girls easily claimed the championship with 88 points, Hawaii Preparatory Academy was second with 43, and Baldwin and Kamehameha tied for third with 19.

The Buffanblu’s Lia Foster and Sydnee Whitty both went 4-for-4 on the day. Foster won the 100 backstroke (56.37) and 200 individual medley (2:04.35), and was on the winning 200 medley relay (1:47.19) and 400 freestyle relay (3:30.53) teams. Whitty claimed the 50 freestyle (23.46) and 100 freestyle (51.27), and swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:37.59) and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Seabury Hall’s Jasmine O’Brien set a meet record in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 4:55.44, and breaking the 2015 mark of 4:56.29 set by Mid-Pacific’s Rebecca Walton.

The Maryknoll 200 medley relay team also established a record when finishing in 1:34.46; Hawaii Prep’s time of 1:35.70 came in 2011. Team members were Albert Zhi, Edmund Shiu, M.J. Mao and Keenan Lee.

“Oh my gosh that’s crazy,” O’Brien said of her record. “It’s just an honor to be able to compete with people like these who are so extremely fast. The fact that I was able to put my name in that record book makes it that much more fulfilling.”

The Buffanblu’s Maddie Balish won her third consecutive girls state title in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:04.41.

“It’s all about the work we’ve put in the last 13 weeks and having each other and the amazing coaches that we do,” she said.

Punahou’s Foster became a three-time state winner in the 100 backstroke. She didn’t win in her sophomore season.

“It did bother me, but then I really looked back on it and I really learned from that event,” Foster said. “Mentally, I wasn’t there and wasn’t having any fun. Honestly that loss is probably one of the most important in my career because I learned to enjoy swimming and now I kind of love it.”

Three boys swimmers won two individual events: Maryknoll’s Mao in the 200 individual medley (1:52.54) and 100 butterfly (47.61); Mid-Pacific’s Dawson Sloan in the 50 freestyle (21.12) and 100 freestyle (45.20); and Owl teammate Michael Petrides in the 200 freestyle (1:37.46) and 500 freestyle (4:28.91).

“It’s not what we wanted, but we all did our best,” Mao said. “I’m happy with the effort everyone put in. I’m proud of my team even though we didn’t finish first.”

The other girl who won two individual events was Maui Prep’s Kysha Altura in the 200 freestyle (1:50.92) and 100 butterfly (56.39).

“I wanted it so bad. I’m so proud of this,” Altura said. “I worked really hard this season just for that. I’ve never been happier.”
