S’Mores flavor joins Girl Scout cookies lineup

It’s Girl Scout cookie time, and there’s a new flavor this year: S’Mores.

The graham-cracker sandwich cookies with a creamy chocolate and marshmallow filling are joining the lineup that includes the ever popular Thin Mints, which account for about a third of Girl Scout cookie sales in Hawaii. (Chewy, coconutty Samoas are second, at 20 percent.)

The introduction of the campfire favorite marks the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of Hawaii and the 100th year of cookie sales.

“The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led entrepreneur program in the world, and is designed to help our scouts grow in confidence and to use their cookie earnings to better not only themselves, but also their communities,” said Shari Chang, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Hawaii, in a statement. “All of the proceeds raised through Girl Scouts of Hawaii’s cookie sales stay in Hawaii, and are used to support troop activities and various service projects that make our communities and the world a better place.”

This year, almost 2,100 girls are participating in the cookie program statewide. Chang said the annual cookie sale helps members gain essential life skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

Expect to see Girl Scouts across the islands in full entrepreneurial force beginning Friday. Statewide, Girl Scouts of Hawaii will distribute more than 471,000 boxes of cookies, with more than 318,000 boxes of them sold on Oahu.

Along with S’Mores, Thin Mints and Samoas, the varieties include peanut-butter patty Tagalongs, shortbread Trefoils, lemony Savannah Smiles and gluten-free Toffee-tastic.

Cookies are $5 per box, or $6 for S’Mores and Toffee-tastic. Some Girl Scouts are selling cookies online with a small shipping and handling fee for boxes shipped to Hawaii. An in-person delivery option is available for no fee. Visit gshawaii.org for more information or email cookies@gshawaii.org.
