Wahine ousted from tournament as CSUN player has career game

Brian McInnis

LONG BEACH, Calif. >> Big West player of the year Channon Fluker scored a career-high 39 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as third-seeded Cal State Northridge rallied to oust sixth-seeded Hawaii, 71-64, in the Big West tournament second round tonight at the Walter Pyramid.

Behind the 6-foot-4 sophomore Fluker, the Matadors trounced the Rainbow Wahine on the backboards, 51-33, including 20-8 on the offensive end, essential in the Matadors (18-13) rallying from a 12-point first-half deficit. They snapped the four-game winning streak of UH, which saw its season end at 12-18.

Fluker shot 14-for-23 from the field and 10-for-18 from the line in coming within four points of matching the Wahine opponent scoring record.

A night after routing seventh-seeded Cal Poly by 21, UH got off to a hot start against a team it lost twice to in the regular season.

Behind eight points from Sarah Toeaina, UH closed the first quarter on a 13-1 run to lead 21-11. Toeaina opened the second period with a leaner to extend the lead to its largest at 12. But that would be the end of the junior’s points, as she missed her next eight shots.

UH turned to a team scoring effort to keep CSUN at bay in the second and the Wahine led 35-29 at intermission, despite Fluker’s 19 points.

Fluker returned to her dominant form and scored her team’s first eight points of the third quarter, igniting a 10-0 run that saw CSUN claim a 43-39 advantage.

Makenna Woodfolk drew Fluker’s third foul late in the period, forcing the center to the bench. UH drew even at 43-all on a drive by Olivia Crawford.

CSUN’s Emily Cole hit a corner 3 but Courtney Middap scored a bucket to get UH within 46-45 heading into the fourth.

Lahni Salanoa evened the score at 48 on a top-arc 3, but Fluker hit a free throw, CSUN grabbed the board on her miss on the second and hit a 3 for a four-point lead.

Salanoa hit her third 3 of the game, Fluker hit a jumper to match her career high of 34, and Adrienne Darden scored off the glass to keep UH within 58-56 with 5:11 remaining.

CSUN extended its lead to seven on a pair of Fluker free throws. Briana Harris (11 points) hit a wing 3 with 1:14 left to keep hope alive momentarily.

UH took fouls to extend the game. Harris hit another 3 to cut it to 66-62 with 27.4 seconds left. Fluker hit two more at the line, offset by Woodfolk’s putback with 17.9 seconds left.

Fluker was sent back to the line and hit one of two, but Lahni Salanoa was off on a 3 to seal the outcome.
