A 72-year-old Minnesota woman, who had been snorkeling in waters off West Maui, was found unconscious in the water, the Maui Fire Department said.

The woman, from Little Canada, Minn., was snorkeling with a family member when beachgoers found her floating face down about 50 yards offshore.

Firefighters arrived at 10:14 a.m. at Kapalua Bay and found other beachgoers had brought the woman to shore. Firefighters subsequently initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Paramedics arrived and provided advanced care life support, but the woman died at the scene.
