Cal Poly throttles Hawaii to split doubleheader

BRUCE ASATO / MARCH 31

Hawaii’s Josh Rojas drove in two runs to help the Rainbow Warriors win their Big West opener today at Cal Poly.

Cal Poly took only a few hours to avenge an 11-1 baseball loss to Hawaii, rebounding for a 15-5 blowout in the second game of today’s doubleheader in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

The rubber game between the Big West teams is scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m. Hawaii time.

Cal Poly parlayed 22 hits and six UH errors into a one-sided outcome at Baggett Stadium. UH starting pitcher Dominic DeMiero lasted just 2 1/3 innings, his briefest outing this season.

In the first game, shortstop Dustin Demeter, third baseman Josh Rojas and left-fielder Adam Fogel each drove in two runs to help the Rainbow Warriors win their Big West opener. The game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader following Friday’s rainout.

Every UH starter had at least one hit, led by center fielder Dylan Vchulek’s 4-for-6 performance.

Brendan Hornung allowed six hits in pitching his third complete game of the season.
