Boy, 7, critically injured by moped rider in Maili

A 7-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition after he was struck by a moped in Maili Monday night.

At about 8:55 p.m., a 24-year-old Waianae man was traveling eastbound on Kulaaupuni Street on a moped when he collided with the child who was running across the street in a marked crosswalk, Honolulu police said.

The moped rider then struck a parked vehicle and was thrown onto the roadway.

Police said the 7-year-old boy of Waianae was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Paramedics also transported the moped rider, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, to a hospital in serious condition.

Excessive speed was involved, said police who are continuing their investigation.
