Maui firefighters airlift man from waterfall

Leila Fujimori

The Maui Fire Department airlifted a 20-year-old Makawao man from the bottom of a 30-foot waterfall in Kahakuloa today.

Firefighters got the call at 3:20 p.m. and arrived at 3:39 p.m. at the Makamakaole Gulch near mile marker 8 of Kahekili Highway.

The man’s father told firefighters his son was stuck at the bottom of the waterfall, too exhausted to climb back up the vertical rock face using only a rope, MFD officials said in a news release.

MFD’s Air-1 helicopter was used to lower a firefighter by rope to reach the man. The man was then secured into a harness and airlifted to a landing zone on Kahekili Highway, and was met by family members.

The man was uninjured and did not need medical attention.
