UH basketball adds Mike Thomas’ younger brother

UH ATHLETICS

Brandon Thomas is a 6-foot-4 guard who just wrapped up his freshman season at Riverside City College, where he scored 12.9 points per game and hit 41.1 percent of his 3-point attempts and 82.9 percent of his free throws.

Junior college wing Brandon Thomas has committed to play for the Hawaii basketball team in 2017-18, setting up a rare pairing of brothers on the same roster.

Thomas’ older brother, Mike, will be a fifth-year senior in the fall.

Brandon Thomas is a 6-foot-4 guard who just wrapped up his freshman season at Riverside City College, where he scored 12.9 points per game and hit 41.1 percent of his 3-point attempts and 82.9 percent of his free throws. Thomas, an academic qualifier out of Taft (Calif.) High, has three years of eligibility remaining.

“Looking back on the year that (UH) had, I can contribute in some ways in areas that they need,” Thomas said in a phone interview. “It just seemed like the perfect fit right now.”

He contributed 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists in his primary role as a shooter.

UH made Thomas’ addition official this afternoon. He is the third player added for next season for the Rainbow Warriors, and fourth overall. Kahuku point guard Jessiya Villa was signed for the 2019-20 season timed for his return from a two-year church mission.

“Brandon’s a big-time shooter,” coach Eran Ganot said in a UH release. “And his high basketball IQ and tireless work ethic has us excited about his growth over the next three years. He’s a classic late-bloomer who’s made major strides of late and has a really bright future. We couldn’t be more happy to add someone of his ability and character to our program.”

It’s believed next season will be the first instance of brothers on the same team in the all-college-opponent era of UH basketball.

“This is going to be pretty cool,” Brandon Thomas said. “I’m going to have to go in there and earn a spot and play hard. I’m ready to work.”

UH has two scholarships still to award for next season.
