A 68-year-old California man has died after he was found unresponsive in waters off of West Maui.

His name has yet to be released.

Just after 3:10 p.m. Sunday, fire rescue crews responded to a report of an unresponsive male snorkeler at Napili Point off of Lower Honoapiilani Road. The Maui Fire Department said the visitor was snorkeling with a friend when at some point the friend observed the man was not moving.

The victim’s friend brought him to shore where bystanders helped carry the visitor out of the water and performed CPR until firefighters and paramedics arrived.

Paramedics began advanced life support measures on the 68-year-old man to no avail and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
