Kayaker with VHF-radio, locator beacon rescued off Kaena Point
The Coast Guard and the Honolulu Fire Department rescued a kayaker today off of Kaena Point who was equipped with a VHF-radio and a personal locator beacon.
In a statement, Petty Officer 1st Class Ashley Labarr called the rescued kayaker “a model example of being prepared. Having the radio and PLB with him made communications and locating him significantly faster and easier.”
At 7:34 a.m., the Coast Guard received a distress call from the kayaker over VHF-radio channel 16 saying he was taking on water.
When watchstanders learned he was equipped with a personal locator beacon, they directed him to activate the device.
A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter spotted the kayaker at 8:36 a.m., about a half-mile from Kaena Point.
Honolulu firefighters assisted in the rescue and brought the kayaker safely to shore by jet ski.
