The ninth annual Hawaii Literacy Block Party took place in front of Murphy's Bar & Grill on Merchant Street between Nuuanu Avenue and Bethel Street on Sept. 7. The event featured food, music from blues-rock band Maneki Nekos and several prize drawings, all in support of Hawaii Literacy's one-on-one tutoring for adults, a bookmobile program in West Oahu and family literacy projects.
