Hawaii outside hitter Stijn Van Tilburg hits past UC Irvine’s Scott Stadick in the first set.

Hawaii junior hitter Stijn van Tilburg tied his career high with 27 kills but it was not enough as No. 5 UC Irvine upset No. 3 Hawaii 17-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-22 tonight in a Big West volleyball match at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Sophomore opposite Rado Parapunov added 12 kills and senior libero Tui Tuileta 11 digs for the Rainbow Warriors (9-2, 1-1 BWC). The loss snapped Hawaii’s home conference winning streak at 14 dating back to 2016.

Junior opposite Karl Apfelbach put down 24 kills and added 11 digs, and senior hitter Aaron Koubi 16 kills for the Anteaters (11-4, 1-1). UCI had lost its past three this season as well as its past five to the Warriors.

Hawaii, one of the top serving team in the country, did not have an ace. The Warriors had eight in Friday’s four-set win over the Anteaters.
