Baseball ‘Bows bobble away another

Loyola Marymount infielder Niko Decolati (28) gets Hawaii infielder Maaki Yamazaki (28) at second base and turns a double play during the third inning on Friday at Les Murakami Stadium.

Loyola Marymount parlayed Hawaii’s pitching breakdown and erratic fielding into a 4-2 baseball victory before 1,419 tonight at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Lions trailed 2-1 and faced a new pitcher — Cade Smith in place of Dominic DeMiero — entering the eighth inning. The Lions loaded the base with one out when UH coach Mike Trapasso summoned closer Dylan Thomas. Thomas induced Ryan Ruley to hit a chopper to third. But Ethan Lopez’s throw to the plate was wide right of catcher Tyler Murray as Niko Decolati and pinch-runner Dylan Hirsch scored.

The Lions added an insurance run in the ninth on Nick Sogard’s first homer of the season, a drive over the wall in right field.

Of the Lions’ seven runs in the first two games of this series, only two were earned.

LMU improved to 3-7. The ’Bows fell to 5-4.

The teams meet Saturday at 6:35 p.m.
