Letter: Gambling income would help state
I agree with Royden Orsatelli (“Lotteries could raise needed public funds,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, Sept. 29).
I, too, would like the Legislature to please bring “Mega Millions” or “Powerball” or one casino to the islands, because many of us seniors or other residents would prefer not to fly to the “Ninth Island” (Las Vegas).
Every year I wonder why Hawaii can’t give us a lottery. Then I remember: There’s this power connected to the Ninth Island that wants Hawaii residents’ money to flow into the coffers of the Ninth Island.
Additionally, there’s a large religious group that uses its influence to prevent the Legislature from approving a lottery, bingo or other gambling. Surely, the majority of island voters do not share its views.
Certainly a percentage of lottery money would assist in providing additional funds to education, the rail project or other necessities here in our beloved state of Hawaii.
Let’s do this, Legislature!
