Pedestrians walk on the Gulick overpass hours after a vehicle hit the overpass.

All lanes of the H-1 Freeway eastbound are being reopened Monday afternoon after a vehicle hit the Gulick Avenue overpass, sending debris onto the highway and closing several lanes.

Traffic is still heavy in the area.

The incident occurred after 2 p.m. Transportation spokesman Tim Sakahara said just after 3 p.m that the debris was cleared from the road, but crews are working to secure exposed rebar from the overpass.

In the meantime, DOT officials say motorists should take Nimitz Highway, Dillingham Boulevard or School Street as alternate routes.

City transportation officials released the following information about the afternoon traffic disruption:

>> They will be “adjusting traffic signal timing on east-west corridors through Honolulu to mitigate the current closure of H-1 Eastbound at Gulick Avenue overpass.”

>> “TheBus is experiencing severe delays due to the eastbound closure of H-1 Freeway at the Gulick Avenue overpass. Buses may be 30-60 minutes late or more. Peak-hour express services from the Alapai Transit Center and downtown Honolulu will be drastically affected. System-wide delays are expected. Please check real-time arrival information at http://hea.thebus.org.”
