Hawaii hitter Stijn van Tilburg garners men’s volleyball player of the week honor

Hawaii’s Stijn Van Tilburg slammed down a point past Long Beach State’s Josh Tuaniga during the second set of a game in the 2019 Big West Conference championship, April 20, at Stan Sheriff Center.

Hawaii senior hitter Stijn van Tilburg today was named the Sports Import/AVCA national player of the week in men’s volleyball, the first of his career and the third for a Rainbow Warrior this season.

Top-ranked Hawaii has the most national weekly honors for 2019. The other two went to junior opposite Rado Parapunov.

Van Tilburg was named the most valuable player of last week’s Big West tournament after helping the Warriors to their first-ever conference title. He had nine kills in the sweep of UC Irvine on Friday when he put down 25 kills without an error in 46 attempts, hitting .543, in the five-set victory over Long Beach State on Saturday.

The victories gave Hawaii the top seed in the NCAA tournament.
