COMMUNITY EVENTS

>> Maui Bird Conservation Center Open House: Annual event includes free guided tours of endangered bird aviaries, 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. today at 2375 Olinda Road.

>> Delaware Day Celebration: Annual party for current and former Delaware residents will begin 2 p.m. today at Beach Bum’s BBQ & Grill in Maalaea. Look for Delaware state flag and “Aloha from the 50th State to the 1st State” banner. Contact Adele Rugg at 879-9964.

>> Coral Pledge Initiative: Free talk on campaign to reduce human impacts on Hawaii’s reefs, presented by Maui Nui Marine Resource Council, at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Maui Ocean Center. Featuring Dan Dennison of Department of Land and Natural Resources and screenings of “Saving Coral” TV special and 3D film “Humpbacks of Hawaii.”

>> Informational meeting: Maui Planning Department officials will discuss proposed shoreline management area and shoreline rule amendments at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Lahaina Civic Center, with formal public hearings to be held next year. Info: mauicounty.gov/121/Planning-Department.

>> 18th Annual Toys for Tots: Collection drive kickoff 8-10 a.m. Saturday at Azeka Shopping Center includes classic car show and presentation of bicycles to selected keiki, followed by Motorcycle Run to Lahaina Minit Stop. >> Maui Planning Commission meets 9 a.m. Tuesday for hearings on permit requests by Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum for expansion of exhibit areas, outdoor displays and gardens, additional parking and more; by Trina Pinsky to operate Haleakala Upcountry Market and Stewz Burgers food truck on 2.5 acres at 16157 Halea­kala Highway; by Costco Wholesale Corp. to expand its fueling facility; by state Airports Division for renovations and expansion of Kahului Airport holding areas and restrooms; and by county Department of Environmental Management to develop facilities at Central Maui Landfill to include offices, areas for abandoned vehicles, electronic and household hazardous waste, and other features.

>> Maui County Council’s special meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday will discuss items to include in county’s 2020 legislative package and recommended first reading of a bill authorizing police to tow vehicles if the motorist is arrested for certain traffic violations including drunken driving.

EVENTS

>> Merwin Conservancy Green Room: Pulitzer Prize-winning poets, writers and translators Robert Hass and Forrest Gander take the stage in this series that honors the late poet laureate W.S. Merwin at 7 p.m. Friday at MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater. Presentation followed by book signing and hosted reception. Cost: $25 ($10 students)

>> Na Nele o Maui: Hawaiian song and art competition for youths from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at MACC’s Castle Theater. Free admission.

>> Rebelution: All-ages concert with Grammy-nominated California reggae band and special guest Through the Roots at 7:30 p.m. Friday at MACC’s Yokouchi Pavilion & Courtyard. Cost: $29.50-$69.50 (prices higher on day of event).

>> Ron Artis II & the Truth: The Oahu soul, blues, gospel and R&B musician performs 7:30 p.m. Saturday at MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater. Cost: $26-$31.

>> Holiday Pops with David Benoit and Sara Gazarek: Maui Pops Orchestra offers a festive concert with Grammy-nominated pianist David Benoit and jazz vocalist Sara Gazarek at 3 p.m. Dec. 15 at MACC’s Castle Theater. Cost: $22-$60.

>> Hawaiian Music Series: Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning DeLima Ohana performs 6-7:30 p.m. Dec. 19 on the lawn at Baldwin House Museum in Lahaina. Cost: Free.

STAGE

>> “Matilda the Musical”: Maui Onstage presents Tony-winning show based on the Raold Dahl book at Iao Theater. Final shows 3 p.m. today, 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Dec. 15. Cost: $20-$40. Info: 242-6969 or mauionstage.com.

EXHIBITS
