Vacant apartments near UH-Manoa, H-1 Freeway go up in flames

Honolulu firefighters responded to a structure fire Saturday at a vacant building near Market City Shopping Center and the H-1 Freeway.

Ten units from the Honolulu Fire Department responded with 38 personnel to a 7:56 p.m. 911 call at 2827 Waialae Ave. and found a two-story, multi family dwelling on fire when they arrived five minutes later, with heavy black smoke emanating from a front corner of the building’s first floor.

HFD said they were informed the apartments on fire were unoccupied and scheduled for renovation, and proceeded with an “agressive” attack along with a primary search to ensure nobody was inside.

The fire was brought under control at 8:22 p.m, with additional measures to extinguish hidden flames and smoldering areas completed shortly thereafter. It was officially extinguished at 9:06 p.m.

Fire damage estimates are not yet available, HFD said; no firefighters were injured during the incident.

HFD’s fire investigator was called to the scene to initiate an investigation to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
