Woman, 25, killed in crash on H-1

A 25-year-old woman died in a single-car crash yesterday on the H-1 freeway near the Makakilo Drive overpass.

At 7:41 a.m., the woman was driving east in a gold-colored 2005 Isuzu. Police said the vehicle was in the center lane when it veered toward the right and hit a guardrail about a half-mile east of the overpass.

The woman was ejected on to the roadway. Police said the vehicle continued toward the left, striking the center concrete median twice before it came to a stop.

The woman, who was alone in the vehicle, was taken in critical condition with severe head injuries to Hawaii Medical Center West, where she was pronounced dead.

She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of crash, police said. There was no indication that any other vehicle was involved or contributed to the crash, police said.

The accident was the 41st traffic-related fatality on Oahu, the same number as at the same time last year.

Police were redirecting traffic on to Farrington Highway, reopening the lanes at 9:40 a.m.

Police arrested a woman and a man Thursday in connection with an armed robbery at a store in Kapolei.

Officers responded to a call about 10:55 a.m. Wednesday and found security officers had stopped a 34-year-old woman after seeing her allegedly shoplift.

While security detained the woman outside, a 34-year-old man drove up and pointed a gun at the security officers, police said. The man and woman drove away, but the security officers got the license plate number.

Officers arrested both suspects, who are homeless, at Oneula Beach Park on suspicion of first-degree robbery.

Indictment called mixup

Big Island businesswoman and philanthropist Cheryl Holdcroft says she feels shocked and betrayed after being indicted on theft and forgery charges.

Holdcroft told West Hawaii Today on Friday that there is "some huge misunderstanding."

Details of the charges contained in the indictment returned Tuesday were unavailable because of state and county furloughs.

Holdcroft was a consultant for the Kona Hospital Foundation for six years before leaving in 2008, when she was the organization’s chief development officer.

The foundation released a statement late Friday from trustee Gregory Chun that said it is cooperating with police and prosecutors.
