5 people injured in 2-car collision

Two vehicles collided about 6:30 p.m. yesterday at 64-350 Kamehameha Highway, near Helemano Military Reservation, said Bryan Cheplic, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman.

Paramedics took a woman in her 20s in critical condition and three others — a man and a woman in their 20s and a woman in her late 30s — in serious condition to a hospital, Cheplic said. A fifth person was treated at the scene, he said.

Police closed Kamehameha Highway between Joseph P. Leong Highway and Helemano Military Reservation while the crash was investigated.

Man indicted in Kapiolani shooting

An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment yesterday, charging the suspect in Friday’s Kapiolani Boulevard shooting with attempted murder.

Reynaldo Valdes-Paz, 36, remained in custody, unable to post $300,000 bail.

Police said Valdes-Paz was arguing with an acquaintance, Damon Jones, 38, in a parking lot along Kapiolani Boulevard across from the Hard Rock Cafe when Valdes-Paz pulled out a handgun.

Valdes-Paz chased Jones and shot him in the back, said Vickie Kapp, deputy prosecutor. After Jones fell, Valdes-Paz stood over him and shot him once in each calf, Kapp said.

Police said Valdes-Paz left in a vehicle, but later surrendered at the Pearl City substation.

A city spokesman said Jones was initially in critical condition but later improved.

Witnesses said the two men were arguing over a woman.

Man charged with driving stolen car

A 24-year-old Waipahu man arrested Monday night after a high-speed chase on the Pali Highway was charged with driving a stolen car.

Romeo Padilla Jr. appeared in District Court yesterday morning to face the charge and was being held on $50,000 bail.

Police said Padilla lost control of a blue 1994 Honda Accord he allegedly stole and caused a multiple-car accident on the Pali Highway.

Police tried to stop Padilla Monday night near the Kailua Safeway market on Hamakua Drive, but he drove away. Two police cars gave chase on wet roads.
